Aracaju, the Capital of Sergipe

Aracaju was founded in 1855, planned and sketched in the shape of a chessboard. It is now a modern city, with the old mansions and their backyards replaced little by little with skyscrapers.

Aracaju’s coastline is one of the main tourist attractions in the state. The coastal front has a steady breeze which cools the atmosphere by a few degrees, making the temperature just right.

CVC, a major Brazilian tour operator, is opening a 5 star hotel and golf resort out of town (approx 10km away).  Even more exciting is a 2.1 Billion US Dollar investment to build an entire city just 12km.

Aracaju has received a huge investment from the city government over the last two years (which we have personally witnessed).  The area has changed so much over the last few years and tourism is on the increase.  For example, we met with the head of Aracaju airport who confirmed that flights have gone up by 50% in 2005.  This year (2006) from Jan to April, flights have increased by 25% already.

Aracaju airport has increased the quantity of flights between Salvador International Airport to coupe with the increased demand (total of 8 daily flights).  The flight time from Salvador to Aracaju is approx 45 mins.  Aracaju does already receive international flights from Argentina.  It is possible to travel by first class coach form Salvador to Aracaju (approx £15, the journey time is 3.5 hours).

Besides Atalaia beach, Aracaju coastal front is formed by eight other beaches: Coroa do Meio, Praia dos Artistas, Havaizinho, Aruana, Náufragos, Robalo, Mosqueiro and Prainha do Vaza Barris. Their greatest characteristic is the total absence of rocks and the nice temperature, perfect for the elderly and children.

Only five minutes crossing the waters, on Santa Luzia Island, we have access to Costa and Atalaia Nova beaches.

Aracaju food and drink prices are approximately 1/3rd of the price of the some western countries.  This makes holidays and retirement affordable in Aracaju.  The people are exceptionally friendly and crime is very low.

On Sergipe River margins, that runs alongside Aracaju, the mangrove thickets develop, forming extraordinary biological complexes that live together in balance with plants, fishes, crustaceans and birds.

The river starts at Lagoa das Areias ( Sand Lagoon), in Serra de Boa Vista, Poço Redondo County, crosses the State from west to east and flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Its most important tributaries are Ganhamoroba River, Cotinguiba River, Sal River, Pitanga River, and Poxim River.

Many North East Coast of Brazil cities are short of water, hence the drive by many banks to push waters to the 'dry areas' The Sergipe River basin is the most important one in the State, providing water for Aracaju, as well as for the sugar cane plantation and cattle breeding in the area, through its tributaries Poxim and Pitanga.
