Located on the north of the Island of Santa Catarina, just 36 Km
from Florianópolis town centre, Ingleses do Rio Vermelho or simply Praia dos
Ingleses (Ingleses Beach) is the neighbourhood that is most highly populated by
all-year residents in the region. Large investment has been made in the last few
years to provide Ingleses with good infrastructure.
The origin of the name 'Ingleses' derives from the belief that an
English ship sank nearby many years ago and some members of its crew settled
there. From then on, the beach would then have been known as 'Englishmen's
Beach'.
The five kilometre long strip of white sand bathed by
the green water of the open ocean is the main attraction at Ingleses. The sea,
with its 22°C on average in summer and medium-sized waves, ensures pleasant
bathing. Ingleses is also a good surfing spot on
many days when well-formed waves make surfers happy. In colder months, Ingleses
fishermen go after schools of fish travelling north in search for warmer waters
and sell their catch to local restaurants, fish shops and fish packing
companies.
The dunes lying between Ingleses and Praia do Santinho
are a natural attraction not to be missed where sandboarding is practised by
people of all ages. A 4-kilometre trail over the dunes leading from one beach to
the other is an interesting outing.
Ingleses features a large number of hotels and
guest-houses, restaurants, clinics, all sorts of shops and public and private
schools as well as branches and ATMs of four large banks. It is a pleasant place
to live, quite near the town centre and served by a good bus service.
