Brazil goes green

The Brazilian government has announced that it plans to promote eco-tourism at various sites of natural beauty.

Environment minister Carlos Minc said that more than £15 million is to be put into improving the green credentials of six federal preservation units, Brazzil Mag reports.

The plan will see the creation of new visitor centres and guides trails in national parks all over the country.

This should help authorities manage the sites more effectively and in a more environmentally-friendly manner, thereby making them more sustainable.

Mr Minc commented: "The aim is to increase the level of protection and enjoyment, and make a profit at preservation units."

He added that about 3.5 million people visit the country's federal preservation units each year.

Earlier this week, Brazzil Mag revealed that more than 3.2 million people entered the South American nation between January and June 2008.

This is 2.67 per cent up on the amount recorded during the same period of the previous year.
