Brazil reaffirms green credentials
Brazil's government has outlined new plans to ensure that its natural assets are protected.
The Amazon rainforest will be boosted by a new international investment fund which has been set up to promote alternatives to deforestation, reports Business Green.
It is hoped that foreign organisations and businesses will contribute more than £10 billion to the fund over the next 15 years.
According to Business Green, environmentalists have praised the Brazilian government for acknowledging the connection between deforestation and climate change.
Roberto Mangabeira Unger, Brazil's minister for strategic affairs, commented: "The fund is a vehicle by which foreign governments can help support our initiatives without exerting any influence over our national policy."
He added that the government is not willing to surrender it sovereignty in exchange for money.
This comes after Brazzil Mag reported that the Brazilian government is intending to promote eco-tourism at various sites of natural beauty.
Environment minister Carlos Minc said that more than £15 million is to be put into improving the green credentials of six federal preservation units.
