Hi

Could number of hotels for sale in Brazil grow on regeneration scheme?

There could be more hotels for sale in Brazil, as the government is investing in Rio de Janeiro to make it safer for tourists.

This is according to Amy Stillman who, writing for the BBC, reported special tours of the city's shanty towns are being organised for visitors.

"Built on steep hillside slopes, the favelas have breathtaking views of the city," the journalist stated.

To make the areas safe for tourists, Police Pacification Units (UPP) have been set up, allowing law enforcers a permanent presence in the shanty towns.

Indeed, the city's tourism ministry has already established a training programme in the Santa Marta favela teaching residents how to become tour guides.

Currently, the police force has a presence in 13 shanty towns and Sergio Cabral, governor of Rio de Janeiro, told the news provider he hoped to expand the UPP to all criminal-controlled areas in the state by 2014.

Glauco Chris Fuzinatto, UK and Ireland director at the Brazilian Tourist Office, recently suggested the country is becoming more popular with travellers, revealing his organisation's website was seeing an increase in traffic.
