New power stations planned for North-East Brazil
Reports suggest that Brazil could be planning to expand its nuclear power generating facilities.
The Xinhua news agency said that the president of Brazil's state-owned Electronuclear enterprise, Othon Pinheiro da Silva, revealed at a press conference that four new nuclear power stations would be constructed in the Latin American nation.
While Mr da Silva said that the full details of the project would be revealed early in 2009, he reportedly did confirm that two of the new stations would be built in the North-East of Brazil.
In total, the four new power stations will have a minimum combined generating capacity of 6,000 megawatts and will provide around 70 per cent of Brazil's nuclear power.
According to the news agency, Mr da Silva added that the new facilities would guarantee the electricity supply in Brazil for the new two decades.
Recently, the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics reported that the construction sector in Brazil was booming.
Its figures showed that infrastructure works in Brazil expanded by over 20 per cent in 2006.
