Brazil's tourist trade and economy is set to be boosted by a new agreement with Australia, it has been confirmed.

Both nations have agreed to liberalise their mutual aviation arrangements, a development which makes the introduction of more flights between the two countries far more likely.

This will allow airlines to double the number of services they operate, thereby offering them more flexibility and opportunities for growth.

Anthony Albanese, the Australian transport minister, commented: "The removal of most restrictions will provide more choice for travellers and allow our airlines to take advantage of the rapidly growing economies of South America."

More than 60,000 business and leisure travellers from Australia visited Brazil last year, making it the most popular South American destination among this group.

This is significantly higher than the amount recorded five years ago, as passenger numbers have gone up by about 15 per cent per annum since 2003.

Aviation officials in Brazil are already expecting growth in the number of people passing through its airports over the next few years, as it is getting ready to host the World Cup in 2014.
