Opportunities for international investment in Bahia could be encouraged by the news that one of its festivals has been recognised as among the best and most colourful local events in the world.
According to author and travel writer Wendy Law-Yone, the North East Brazilian state's Bonfim celebration - which takes place on January 14th 2010 - is a fantastic build-up to the country's festival season.
In an article for the Guardian, Ms Law-Yone explained that the colourful ribbons which can be seen adorning buildings in Bahia all year round are in reference to the huge Bonfim Catholic cathedral in state capital Salvador, where the festivities take place.
While it is traditionally a Christian religious festival, she pointed out that it owes just as much to the region's African heritage.
"It is also one big street party," she added.
Her remarks come after Lonely Planet described Rio de Janeiro as one of the top ten places in the world to spend New Year's Eve.
