Brazil is to invest billions of reais into its airports ahead of the Fifa World Cup 2014, which it will be hosting.
The Social Communications Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic and the Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company (Infraero) have said that five billion reais (£1.62 billion) is to be ploughed into the airports of the host cities in order to make the tournament a better experience for visitors.
Pinto Martins in Fortaleza and Guararapes in Recife are among those already in line to receive finance, while investment in the hubs in Salvador and Natal is still being discussed, Brazzil magazine reports.
An Infraero spokesperson said that the airport improvements should all be complete by 2010.
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, there has been a 134 per cent increase in visitors to Brazil since 2004. This figure is likely to increase in the coming years as the World Cup draws closer.
