Brazil should be given the chance to host the 2016 Olympic Games because it would increase inward investment.
This is according to the country's president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who this week urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) not to simply give the games to richer countries, as the event would transform Brazilian society for the better.
"Brazil is among the ten biggest economies in the world and it is the only one of the ten which has never organised the Olympics," he commented.
Mr Lula da Silva added that Brazil is being improved whether it gets the games or not, but that a chance to host would encourage investors, such as those wanting to buy property in Brazil, to see that the country has long-term potential.
Brazil is competing against Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid for the Olympic Games and a vote will be held in October.
Earlier this month, the 12 host cities in Brazil for the 2014 Fifa World Cup were announced, with north eastern cities Fortaleza, Natal and Salvador among them.
