Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said that the government will spend as much as it takes within reason to ensure that the Fifa World Cup in 2014 is a success.
According to Globo G1, as much as $40 billion (£24.3 billion) could be spend on infrastructure prior to the tournament in order to ensure that the stadia and facilities are competitive with those in other countries.
Mr Lula da Silva said that while Brazil will not put itself in debt to do so, it will not scrimp either.
"What we want is ... to spend whatever is necessary to facilitate the lives of people before, during and after the World Cup," he commented.
The president added that investors, such as those with property in Brazil, will have chance to make money from the competition.
The 12 host cities in Brazil were recently announced and include Fortaleza, Manaus, Natal, Salvador and Sao Paulo.
Brazil has won the World Cup five times and has hosted the tournament once before, in 1950.
