Aviation authorities in Brazil have confirmed that they will invest in upgrading the country's airports, the Associated Press reports.
The South American nation is set to host the football World Cup in 2014, which should bring about a significant increase in the number of incoming leisure travelers.
Therefore, the government has confirmed that £1.3 billion is to be spent on expanding and upgrading the major transport hubs across the country, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.
This follows calls from the Brazilian Association of General Aviation to improve the existing facilities as they do not have the necessary infrastructure to cope with the expected volume of visitors.
Indeed, the organisation's Adalberto Febeliano recently predicted that monthly passenger numbers would double throughout the duration of the tournament.
This will be only the second time that Brazil has hosted the football tournament and the first World Cup to be staged in South America since 1978.
However, it is the most successful nation in terms of the game itself, as Brazil have lifted the trophy a record five times.
