Business investment in Brazil could be encouraged by news that the country's telecoms industry is predicted to develop in coming years, driven by the uptake of smartphones.
Speaking to Business News Americas, senior analyst at Pyramid Research Omar Salvador forecast that the market for high-end handsets would expand at a compound annual growth rate of 43 per cent between 2010 and 2014.
By the end of this period, sales of these devices will make up more than one-third of all mobile phone sales, he predicted.
This is a significant increase in ownership of these gadgets - in 2008 they accounted for three per cent of sales, while they gained seven per cent market share over the last 12 months.
Mr Salvador noted that they have been popular with a range of customers in the Latin American country, saying: "End-users have shown a lot of interest in smartphones, not only in the corporate segment but in the residential segment."
Earlier this year, Pyramid predicted that eight emerging economies - including Brazil - will account for 35 per cent of global mobile subscriptions by 2013.
