Brazil's domestic tourism sector has benefited from the low value of the real against the dollar, it has been suggested.
According to Brazzil Magazine, "many Brazilians" elected to take their holidays inside the country this year instead of heading abroad, which has aided the nation's coastal cruise sector significantly.
Cruises along the coast of Brazil have grown by 623 per cent in the last eight years, according to statistics from the Brazilian Association of Maritime Companies.
Its latest estimates project that 500,000 tourists will enjoy cruises to destinations such as Salvador, Natal and Fortaleza during the 2008-09 season, which runs from November to April.
This is an increase of 25 per cent compared to 2007-08.
Brazil's currency is currently trading at a rate of 2.31 reais to $1. The Central Bank of Brazil does not expect it to change much over the course of 2009, predicting last week that it would finish the year at 2.25 reais to $1, Brazzil Magazine reported.
