More property in Bahia could be needed to house workers at one of the world's largest nickel sulphide mines as it is set to begin full production.
Australian mining firm Mirabela said output is at about 25,000 tonnes of rock per day at the site, which is the largest resource of its kind in South America and also the biggest new discovery of nickel sulphide anywhere in the world in the last decade.
The company added that the mine at Santa Rita in Bahia's production is set to more than double by the end of October 2009, reaching 60,000 tonnes daily.
That figure will grow even higher by the end of the year thanks to the delivery of new equipment, with the mine expected to sustain maximum levels of production for the next 19 years.
Investment in Brazil has seen it rank in the world's top five for production of a range of agricultural and mineral commodities, Mirabela explained.
