Government initiatives - such as Minha Casa, Minha Vida - are currently helping more families to buy property in Brazil.

This is according to Paulo Cabral, writing for the BBC, who said a "healthy mortgage market" is an indication of the sector's success in recent months.

He noted lending in the region rose to 23.8 billion reais (£8.9 billion) in the first half of 2010, which is a 77 per cent rise compared with the same period last year.

According to Mr Cabral, state programmes geared towards low-income families are driving this surge.

He spoke to Antonio and Aparecida Duarens who bought their first home through such a scheme after being married for 22 years.

"Had it not been for the economic growth and the government programmes, it would have taken me much longer to buy my own house," said Mrs Duarens.

Launched in 2009, Minha Casa, Minha Vida (My House, My Life) is an initiative that aims to bridge the inequality gap and housing deficit in Brazil's property market.
