As an emerging and significant player in global economies, expansion of the BRIC group of nations could lead to greater levels of investment in Brazil.
BRIC is the informal term used to refer to Brazil, Russia, India and China when the economic development of the four countries is discussed.
However, the acronym could soon read BRICSA with the news that South Africa is hoping to join the group.
Jacob Zuma, president of South Africa, tells the Associated Press why he believes it is important to represent the African continent in the informal collective.
"Participation in BRIC would mean that an entire continent that has a population of over a billion people is represented," he says.
He adds: "We think that the BRIC expresses a very important grouping in a changing world today."
The Associated Press adds that, within 25 years, some analysts believe investment in Brazil, Russia, India and China will make the four nations the dominant global economic force, greater than the Group of Seven developed economies.
