Investment in Brazil will need to be made before the country hosts the World Cup in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2016, it has been claimed.

The Inquirer quoted the nation's president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as saying: "We are going to organise the best World Cup ever seen."

However, the news provider suggested infrastructure will need to be improved before the country is ready for the 600,000 visitors expected to arrive for the event.

Rio de Janeiro will be the focus of investment, with state governor Sergio Cabral asserting $144 million (£91 million) has been dedicated to tackling crime in the area.

Transport links will also receive money, with tourism minister Luiz Barretto stating airport infrastructure is the "main goal".

Meanwhile, $400 million will be spent across Brazil building 5,200 km of roads and railways to connect the 12 venues that will be used during the World Cup.

People interested in speculating in the country ahead of the tournament have been told by co-manager of the $2bn HSBC GIF Brazil Equity Fund Jose Cuervo the current environment is "potentially ideal" for investment.
