Investment in Fortaleza is to improve its airport facilities in time for the 2014 World Cup, it has been reported.
According to Air Cargo News, the city is home to one of the 16 stadiums across Brazil that will host the sporting event.
Fortaleza is currently the 5th busiest airport in the country, importing supplies to support industries including construction, medicines and steel.
Meanwhile, exports such as fruit, textiles, footwear and clothing are shipped out from the transport hub, the news provider reported.
In preparation for the World Cup, the governmental organisation for civilian airports Infraero is building a new 8,000 sq m cargo terminal with a completion date at the beginning of next year, the information source stated.
Between January and July 2010, the airport handled 4,059 tons of exports and imports - a capacity that will be quadrupled by the new works.
