Investment in Rio de Janeiro has begun ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games, which will be hosted by the city, Mayor Eduardo Paes has announced.
The Associated Press quoted the official stating that "infrastructure works" were underway, while the organisers of the event brought together coaches and athletes to help with preparations this week.
Rio 2016 committee president Carlos Arthur Nuzman explained to the news provider: "This group has extensive experience and will advise us mostly on what concerns the sports facilities and the Olympic Village."
The idea for the team was inspired by a similar council created in England to help prepare for the 2010 London Olympics, the information source noted.
Its 14 members, including football coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, will be expected to promote the occasion overseas as well as at home, the Associated Press said.
Brazilian sports minister Orlando Silva was recently reported by the Miami Herald to have said $18 billion (£11.33 billion) will be ploughed into improving infrastructure in the country before 2014, in order to prepare it for the World Cup.
