Strong returns can be won by those who invest in infrastructure and property in Brazil, an expert has said.
Victor Munoz, managing director in the Sao Paulo office of private equity investor Denham Capital, which focuses on energy and commodities in emerging markets, told the Financial News that the country is currently under great pressure to improve its infrastructure, opening up opportunities for foreign investors.
Social mobility in Brazil has led to a growing middle-class demographic which, alongside the upcoming Fifa World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, is creating a greater demand for better transport networks and accommodation, he said.
According to Mr Munoz, investing in roads, airports, transportation and property is a relatively low-risk venture. "Everybody knows that infrastructure investments are long-term," he explained.
The best time to invest in Brazil is during the planning, development and construction phases of new projects, the expert added. Although risk is slightly greater at this point, the returns are likely to be higher.
