Countries which win their bid to host the Olympic Games are likely to benefit significantly, experts have stated.

The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) said the host nation is likely to receive a lot of extra attention across the globe.

This means that more foreign consumers will be likely to consider travelling there and seeing what attractions it has to offer.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for Abta, said this creates the need for extra facilities to handle the additional visitor numbers.

He commented: "It is always very beneficial for the countries chosen in the following years.

"Places become a lot more attractive to tourists."

Mr Tipton added that a successful Olympic bid should trigger widespread investment in various infrastructure upgrades.

Brazil is currently among the countries bidding to host the Olympic Games in 2016.

Some 277 athletes from the South American country have been participating in this year's event, which is taking place in Beijing, China.
