Energy giant Petrobras is set to expand its commercial property in Rio Grande do Norte, the company has revealed.
The state-owned oil group announced that it would begin construction work at its Clara Camarao refinery in a ceremony attended by the country's President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva.
It will make the North Eastern state completely self-sufficient in oil products thanks to increased production at the plant, Petrobras' president Jose Sergio Gabrielli de Azevedo said.
He explained that a decade ago, the facility generated annual orders of around 50 million reais (£17.4 million) from retailers across the state.
"Now orders add up to 450 million reais and this generates income and jobs for the local population," he added.
The governor of Rio Grande do Norte, Wilma de Faria, noted that the company directly employs 12,000 people in the state and indirectly gives work to another 40,000.
This news comes after Petrobras reported that tests on a new well in the Tupi oil field show it is capable of producing 50,000 barrels per day.
