Those looking for property in Florianopolis may be interested to know that a recent study from Brazil's Institute of Applied Economic Research has predicted that extreme poverty will be wiped out in the area by 2012.
According to the research, income in the country has been rapidly increasing, with 12.8 million fewer poor people by 2008 compared with 1955 and a further 12.1 million lifted from extreme penury in that time, Xinhua reported.
This constitutes a drop of 33.6 per cent in the poverty rate and nearly a 50 per cent decrease in extreme poverty, the news provider noted.
Although 10.5 per cent of the nation's population are currently categorised as extremely poor and another 28.8 per cent are considered poor, if the rate that incomes have increased during Lula's presidency remains steady, extreme poverty could be eliminated in Brazil by 2016, the study estimated.
However, in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina - where Florianopolis is located - extreme poverty is expected to have been wiped out by 2012.
Rising income, director for Latin America at Moody's Economy.com Alfredo Coutino told the Wall Street Journal recently, could increase consumer demand in the country and fuel investment.
