Property in Rio de Janeiro is becoming more sustainable ahead of the 2016 Olympics, it has been claimed.
Speaking to Reuters, technical manager for the Green Building Council Brasil Marcos Casado predicted the country's environmentally-friendly real estate industry would grow in the coming years.
"It is most evident in Rio de Janeiro. If you look at the buildings under development by the city and state governments, nearly all of them include sustainability criteria," he said.
Meanwhile, private companies are also becoming greener, with Eike Batista's EBX group retrofitting a Rio de Janeiro hotel, the news provider reported.
The International Olympic Committee requires arenas and stadiums to be energy efficient and have low carbon emissions.
As this encourages green construction across the land, Mr Casado forecast a 30 per cent annual expansion in the total amount of sustainable building space in the near future.
A Rio City Hall tool entitled the Legadometro was launched on October 8th to measure the economic, urban, social and environmental impact of the Olympic Games.
