In news that may interest those considering investing in property in Salvador, the destination has been promoted as an ideal alternative to Rio de Janeiro for potential tourists.
Ashley Robinson, travel expert for the Examiner.com, wrote that although Rio is well-known for its carnivals and laid-back atmosphere, Salvador da Bahia is less crowded and may offer a more authentic Brazilian trip for holidaymakers.
He points out that it was once the capital of the Latin American country and has a rich heritage thanks to its colonial past and links to the slave trade.
This has led to Salvador da Bahia having strong links with African culture that is evident in its dancing, foods, markets and traditions.
Mr Robinson states that the city is popular among those hoping for a relaxing beach holiday, but will also cater for people who want to explore the culture of Brazil during their stay.
Bahia has a long and well-documented history. The first Europeans there were Spaniards in 1500, who landed close to what is now Recife as part of exploration voyages. However, these were by no means the first people, since evidence of Indian tribes has been found dating back to pre-history.
Today, the metropolitan area of Salvador is noted for its architecture and the city is the wealthiest in the north eastern region.
June may have been a particularly popular time to visit north eastern Brazil, so those with properties in its resorts could have seen positive returns for the start of the summer.
The Sao Joao Festival takes place every year in June, which is celebrated throughout the state of Bahia, Discover Travel Group reports. Local people start bonfires and watch fireworks, while Forro music and square dancing take place in public places.
Local delicacies and plenty of liquor is offered up to those taking part and visitors, so a carnival atmosphere is prevalent throughout.
The town of Lencois welcomes three-man bands called trios for the event, who perform Quadrilha dance shows. These tell traditional Brazilian stories in a comic way and are a popular attraction among travellers.
For anyone looking to invest in an unspoiled destination, the area close to the island of Boipeba may be a good opportunity.
An article in the Times recently recommended it as a "slice of heaven" for families and flashpackers. Although much of the land is protected, holidaymakers can travel there by boat from the mainland, so accommodation close by could prove the perfect base for them.
