Sports 'will have a positive impact in Brazil'

Sports events held in Brazil will have a positive impact on the country long after they have left, it has been claimed.

In the wake of the announcement of the 14 host cities for the 2014 Fifa World Cup, property market analyst James Gonzalez told Nubricks that those who own property in Brazil will benefit greatly from the tournament.

"The benefits of owning property near the location of a major sporting event are obvious and these benefits often outlive the duration of the event," he pointed out, stating that people often travel a long way to watch such games and therefore will need somewhere to stay.

Mr Gonzalez added that if tourists are given a positive view of the place where they stay, they are more likely to return and tell their friends about it, therefore increasing tourism to those destinations.

Not only this, but inward investment is likely to be attracted by the World Cup tournament, allowing Brazil to improve its amenities further and in turn, attract more holidaymakers.

The positive impact upon World Cup host countries can be demonstrated by South Africa. Although it is not to host the event until 2010, it has already generated more revenue than any other World Cup in the past 100 years, Engineering News reports.

Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan said that Fifa has signed contracts so far worth $3.2 billion (£1.94 billion).

Meanwhile, according to the Global Post, president Jacob Zuma said that 400,000 jobs have already been created in the country, while consulting firm Grant Thornton has estimated that $7 billion could be generated for South Africa in total by the World Cup.

Given the growing popularity and accessibility of long haul travel, this is a level of revenue that Brazil could also aim to achieve for its own tournament, so property owners or those thinking of making an investment could reap the benefits of increased rentals.

Brazil is also campaigning to host the Olympic Games in 2016 - the country's president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva this week appealed to the International Olympic Committee in a bid to stress that developing countries should also be given a chance to host.

Natal, a city on Brazil's north east coast, could be an excellent place to buy property in time for the World Cup and possibly the Olympics.

It is already a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful beaches, plus a new airport is planned there that could increase accessibility to visitors.

Trip Advisor reports that the city is home to the cleanest air on the continent - according to NASA - and also to the world's largest cashew tree.
