There may be more people looking to invest in North East Brazil, as the area has many attractive features for tourists, one expert has said.

Marco Lomanto, products and destinations director of the UK and Ireland Brazilian Tourist Office, described the region as "very diverse", saying that it has a lot to offer overseas travellers.

Popularity among foreign visitors could be one factor creating an opportunity for those wishing to make an investment in Brazil, particularly as property in Bahia and other states in the North East could be rented out to holidaymakers.

Real estate in Salvador, for instance, may attract tourists who are looking for a cultural break, as it seems the city has a lot to offer those who wish to marvel at Latin American history, art and living.

"It is known for its music and cuisine, but also for its architecture," Mr Lomanto stated, explaining that it is the largest metropolis along the North East coast and the capital of the state of Bahia.

"Pelourinho is the breath-taking historic centre within Salvador… known for its painted colonial townhouses and traditional capoeira celebrations," he continued.

Indeed, the borough has been classified by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation as a world heritage site.

However, Salvador is not the only place in Bahia with something to offer overseas travellers, as resorts like Costa dos Coqueiros and Costa do Descobrimento are located along the coastline and the state is also home to one of the largest carnivals in the world, Mr Lomanto said.

Indeed, he highlighted that the region is known as the "state of happiness".

The specialist explained that the area has a strong afro-Brazilian heritage, which has influenced the local culture and may mean people staying in the region experience something slightly different to those in other parts of the country.

Music and cuisine are particularly affected by Bahia's history, he noted, saying that some of the dishes available there are of West African origin, such as moqueca.

Other states in North East Brazil include Ceara, Rio Grande do Norde and Pernambuco and real estate in each of these regions could see an influx of visitors when they host World Cup games in 2014.

The sports tournament will come to three cities in this part of the country: Salvador, Recife and Natal.

Nationwide, matches will be held across 12 locations, including Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and the capital Brasilia.
