Anyone thinking of a property investment in Salvador or other north eastern areas of Brazil may be interested in some new research which has found that people are still keen to travel for special occasions, despite the recession.
Peter Yesawich's Y Partnership found that so-called celebration vacations are still widespread, with 70 per cent of respondents saying they choose to go on a special holiday after something significant has happened.
Three-quarters of people said the most likely special event that will encourage them to travel is a wedding or a milestone anniversary, with 98 of brides-to-be still planning a honeymoon.
Many people said that they would be opting for a bed and breakfast break as a means of saving money but still being able to go to a luxury destination, while one-week breaks are becoming more popular for the same reasons.
Australian magazine Bride to Be recently carried out a Cost of Love survey and found that the most popular kind of romantic break was still the beach honeymoon, with over half of couples choosing this kind of trip.
Editor Amelia Bloomfield speculated that luxury is still popular when it comes to honeymoons because couples are saving their money up for longer to have a once-in-a-lifetime trip, instead of several smaller breaks in the run-up to their wedding.
Tom Falcao, general manager of the London Tourist Office of the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism said earlier in 2009 that resorts in Brazil - especially Salvador and Rio de Janeiro - are continuing to see strong bookings even amid the credit crunch.
This could be because the pound is currently strong against the real, so travellers could get more from their money in Brazil than in expensive eurozone destinations.
Mr Falcao also pointed out that the diversity of Brazil makes it consistently popular.
"The variety of tourism one can find in Brazil at the moment is amazing," he commented, adding that diving trips, adventure breaks and eco-tourism opportunities are all possible in the Latin American country.
For those interested in property in Salvador, it is the capital of Bahia state and according to Travel-Brazil.info is the second most popular destination for tourists in Brazil.
It boasts some of the country's longest stretches of coastline and has plenty of attractions for culture vultures, with the Museu Afro-Brasiliero detailing the history of the slave trade being a particular highlight.
The Largo do Pelourinho, a small plaza in the old section of town, is also popular for diners and people-watchers.
